FOSTERING CHILDREN’S ACCESS TO EDUCATION, HEALTH AND SAFETY SERVICES THROUGHOUT THAILAND
We ensure that all the children we work with have access to education and support their school enrollment.
We raise health awareness directly in the communities and facilitate their access to local medical services.
For those most in need we conduct individual case management and provide tailored support.
All statistics presented in this video were from data collected during BDF programs between January and November 2018.
Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) creates tailored action plans for communities and providing one-on-one, tailored case management including direct, immediate protection to families identified as at risk.
BDF provides direct support according to individual needs and action plans including food, education, school supplies, financial support, baby supplies, etc. as well as provides social work guidance, counseling, and/or referrals to public safety, health and education services.
On a community level BDF enrolls children in school and removes barriers to enrollment such as transportation, school fees, uniforms, translation of documents, etc.as well as supports children’s access to vaccination and medical care.
Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) staff provides educational sessions tailored to the needs of the community, in order to enhance child development, prepare school-aged children for integration into Thai public schools, and prevent drop-out once enrolled. Activities include Early Childhood Development (ECD) activities, sports, arts, Thai language classes, and educational support and flexible learning strategies (ex. after-school support, digital educational tools).
BDF also teaches children essential life skill knowledge in the form of “superpowers” through 15 superhero-themed modules in the Superheroes Academy, including Child Protection, Oral Hygiene, Safe Migration, Puberty, Road Safety, Child Rights, etc. as well as provide access and support to use the Digital Superheroes Academy (DSHA), an educational, superhero-themed web and mobile app which equips children with hard and soft skills necessary for their future. DSHA e-life skills are delivered in the children’s native languages.
Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) provides specialized training to community members, adults and youth, to become Peer Educators and support children and families in their own communities to access education, health and safety services, as well as providing immediate protection in critical situations (Example: first aid, calling domestic violence hotline, supporting school enrollment and access to medical centers directly, running their own educational/sports sessions for children in the community, etc.).
This includes collaborating with construction companies and trained Peer Educators to create a child-safe space in every camp and working with construction companies and Peer Educators to ensure Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) will be available in clean, safe, and accessible areas in communities.
BDF also provides life coaching, upskilling and action planning to empower vulnerable women (domestic violence survivors, single mothers, mothers of children with special health care needs, etc.) in need of support to gain autonomy for themselves and their families.
Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) achieves systemic impact in the Thai construction sector by working with major property and construction companies to improve living conditions for labor migrants and their families. BDF forms strategic partnerships with schools, NGOs, international agencies, and private sector stakeholders in the construction sector as well as conducts research to understand the issues facing migrant and marginalized children, children at risk of being separated from their families, as well as those left behind during migration.
BDF is currently developing guidelines from the Chiang Mai Framework for Action (CMFA) and training construction sector stakeholders on the guidelines, as well as providing a national proof of concept to real estate and construction companies demonstrating how the CMFA can be adopted in construction site camps throughout Thailand.
One-on-one assistance to families facing critical challenges
The Individual Support Program (ISP) is central to all of BDF’s work. Through our programs and outreach sessions, we identify children and families who require additional, in-depth assistance.>>
Non Formal Education sessions to facilitate school integration
Blueprints is our cross-cutting approach to critical support, designed to ensure migrant children’s right to access essential services with a special focus on education.>>
A safe environment for vulnerable toddlers
BDF’s nursery provides childcare for babies and toddlers between 18 months to 4 years old who grow up in especially difficult circumstances.>>
Essential life skills for children
The Superheroes Academy empowers children by teaching them fundamental life skills in the form of ‘superpowers.’ Superheroes are used as role models to inspire and engage children in key conversation about education, healthcare, and child rights.>>
Supporting constructions workers and their children
By working in partnership with local and national construction companies, BDF also trains adult construction workers in essential life skills and empowers them to serve their communities' access to education, health and safety services.>>
Stimulating activities for children during their school holidays
The Smile Holidays Program offers children living in precarious conditions a safe place during school holidays where they can play, learn, and socialize.>>
Empowering women, investing in change
Dao (the Thai word for ‘star’) is the Social Initiative of Baan Dek Foundation. Our Dao Team trains marginalized women in production skills and work readiness that makes it possible for them to reintegrate into society.>>
